The World Bank and Partners in Development Regional Workshop
"The Relevance of Transparency, Accountability, and Participation
Since the Arab Spring"
Date : Sunday, April 7 through Tuesday, April 9, 2013
Location : Zamalek Marriott
Cairo, Egypt
Dear sir\ Madame
The current events in the region have put a spotlight on the governance agenda. Demands for better governance (together with unemployment issues) are at the center of the popular uprising in several countries in the region. The existence of a “governance deficit” in the region is widely known: actionable governance indices, such as Global Integrity, indicate that MENA lags behind other parts of the world on many governance dimensions. The gaps are particularly pronounced in areas such as transparency, civil liberties, media freedom, participation and social accountability. In many MENA countries key enabling factors such as citizen access-to-information, freedom of the press, general civil liberties, and transparency of government operations are (often severely) restricted.
The World Bank and Partners in Development have joined together to organize a 3-day workshop in Zamalek Marriott from Sunday April 7 until Tuesday, April 9, 2013. The workshop is entitled: “Relevance of Transparency, Accountability and Participation since the Arab Spring”. The objective of which is to stimulate debate about governance issues, the role of the World Bank in broader governance reforms and the implications for future work.
As the third annual regional governance workshop, this event will bring together development practitioners from the World Bank with government officials and representatives from civil society organizations and media to ensure a frank and open debate about the potential role of the World Bank in the ongoing governance debate in the region.
Important topics of the workshop include (inter alia) reforms to improve budget transparency, to address conflict-of-interest issues, and to strengthen social accountability and public consultation.
