Sponsored by Professor Gaber Nassar, President of Cairo University, and Professor Moataz Abdullah, Dean of Faculty of Arts, Cairo University, organizes a symposium, entitled “The Reality of Japanese Studies in the Arab World”, for celebrating 40 years since the establishment of the Japanese Department. The symposium starts on November 16, 2014, at 10 a.m., Conference Hall, Faculty of Arts, ending on November 18, 2014.
Some Japanese Universities, which signed cultural protocol with Cairo University, have participated in the conference in cooperation with Japan Information and Culture Center, Embassy of Japan at Cairo, Japanese Organization for International Cooperation. A group of faculty professors and academics from different Japanese Universities have attended the symposium where 20 research papers have been presented.
Professor Karam Khalil, Chair of the Japanese Department, has pointed out that the Adviser of the Japanese Foundation for International Cooperation President at Tokyo, Director of the Center for International Studies at the University of Tokyo, Ambassador of Japan at the Arab Republic of Egypt, Former Ambassador of Japan at Libya, and Former Visiting Professor at the Japanese Department, Faculty of Arts, Cairo University, will be honored on the sidelines of the symposium.
Khalil has illustrated that the activities of the symposium tackle several theses, such as; studies on the Japanese language and comparing it to other languages, problems of translation from Japanese to Arabic and vice versa for Arabs, information technology and the future of foreign languages education, Japanese language and culture in Egypt as means of soft power, studies on comparative ideological and cultural studies, and studies on the Japanese literature and comparing it to other languages.
The activities of the conference also include displaying scientific personal experiences of the students of the Japanese Department who were in scholarships at Japan during the academic year 2013/2014 in the framework of cooperation protocol between Cairo University and the Japanese Universities.
