The high committee of Waqf Al Fangari Annual Competition for social service research at Cairo University headed by Dr. Hussam Kamel, President of the University, announced the names of the winners of the prizes of the competition for the year 2009/2010. The competition’s theme was about the problems and solutions for mines in Egypt. The announcement was made after the refereeing panel had finished evaluating the research studies that were submitted by 29 researchers from different universities, research centers, and institutions. The first prize, which was worth 15 thousand pounds, was awarded to Dr. Waleed Khaled Mohamed Al Abidi, Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Science in El Mansoura University. The second prize, which was worth 10 thousand pounds, was shared by both Dr. Osama Mohamed El Husseini Youssef, Professor in the Faculty of Agriculture at Cairo University, and Dr. Fouad Ahmed Farid, a researcher at the National Research Center. The third prize, which was worth 5 thousand pounds, was awarded to Mohamed Attiah Mahmoud Attiah, a researcher in the field of International Law. The committee also decided, in the light of the recommendation of the refereeing panel, to award each of the subsequent 15 researchers in the list of winners an incentive award of one thousand pounds.
Dr. Heba Nassar, Vice President of the University for the issues of social service and environmental development, who supervises Waqf Al Fangari Competition for social service research studies, announced that it has been decided that the research studies which have won the first place in the mines competition be printed and that the researchers will be honored in a celebration that will be held by Cairo University under the patronage of Dr. Hussam Kamel, University President, during the first half of the academic year of 2010/2011.
Dr. Heba Nassar also added that the high committee for the Waqf of the late Chancellor Mohamed Shawqi Al Fangari has decided to announce the theme of the competition for the year 2010/2011 which is to be entitled ‘Agricultural Development in Egypt: The Problem and the Solution’. The end of May 2011 has been determined as the cut-off date for submitting research studies in this topic. Moreover, she highlighted the fact that this competition, which is organized by the social services and environmental development sector and was first held 4 years ago, aims at encouraging applied and theoretical research which addresses specific problems in the Egyptian society. Besides, it aims at reaching scientific and pragmatic solutions to be at the officials and the decision-makers’ disposal when facing these problems, along with a bunch of other possible options and solutions. She said that it is for this that the high committee of the Waqf competition selects research topics that are related to the predicaments of the Egyptian society.
