Cairo University Scores Silver in the STARS (Sustainability Tracking, Assessment & Rating System) classification for evaluating and tracking sustainability in universities


Dr. Mohamed Sami Abdelsadek, President of Cairo University, announced that CU is the first university in Egypt to achieve the silver rank in the STARS classification.


STARS, added Dr. Abdelsadek, is a global classification that measures the sustainability performance of universities in a pluralistic and comprehensive manner, while translating the concepts of sustainable development into measurable goals at the campus level.  The STARS rating includes five main pillars: the academic field; community partnership; resource management; planning and administration; and innovation and leadership


The University President also indicated that Cairo University having obtained the silver rank in the STARS classification confirms CU’s commitment to including the concepts of sustainability in all sectors of the university. The President also stressed that Cairo University is on the right track and working hard in various colleges, institutes, departments, and centers, and in partnership with students, to achieve the gold rank in the STARS classification by developing programs, guidelines, and controls to ensure the longevity of these changes, providing CU with a comprehensive basis for its ongoing journey towards sustainability.


Cairo University’s obtaining the silver rank in the STARS classification confirms its commitment to confronting the unprecedented challenges facing the world today, promoting increased awareness of sustainability issues, and bringing about the change led by Cairo University to put its sustainability efforts on the global map. 


For her part, Dr. Suhair Ramadan Fahmy, General Coordinator of the Sustainability Office, and Dr. Mohamed Naguib, Executive Director of the Sustainability Office, explained that CU’s participation in the STARS system is an important part of CU’s strategic planning to enhance development for a more sustainable future, with a consistent focus on building and developing the CU community towards a healthier and more sustainable future.  


It was also noted that the file submitted by CU to STARS includes CU goals and priorities based on innovations and solutions developed at various faculties, institutes and departments of Cairo University, with a view to creating a sustainable campus that enhances the university’s teaching and research mission while fulfilling CU’s societal responsibilities and working diligently to achieve sustainable development goals and other aspects of Egypt’s Vision 2030.
