A student team from Cairo University and Ain Shams University wins the bronze medal and third place in the first student participation of Egypt in International Genetically Engineered Machine (IGEM) competition. Nassar has pointed out that the student team which participated in the global competition was equal to the team of The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), at the United States, the organizer of the competition which seeks education, competition and participation among students teams from around the world.

Dr. Salwa Farouk Thabet, a member at the supervising team of Faculty of Science, said that 30 states at Asia, Europe, Latin America, North America and Africa have participated in the activities of this competition which took place from September 24 to 28, 2015. The activities of Egypt were represented by students from Cairo University and Ain Shams University. The team worked in Egypt and then a group from the team travelled to represent the team at Boston to present the experiment of the Egyptian team. The team was supervised by Dr. Salwa Farouk Thabet, Faculty of Science, Cairo University, Dr. Maged Ghoneima, Faculty of Engineering, Ain Shams University, Dr. Mohamed Zazoua, Faculty of Medicine, Ain Shams University. Cairo University, Ain Shams University and Biotechnology Program, Faculty of Science, Cairo University, boosted and funded the team travel and safety, and providing laboratories and experiments devices. The competition included 3 programs; they are the competition program of the students interested in the genetic engineering field, the laboratory program which aims at using the least available resources for conducting scientific research, as well as a totalizer application which aims at establishing a biological device compiled from small parts at the biological library.

The Egyptian team was represented by students from four faculties and two universities. They are Aya Mahmoud and Radwa Raaouf, Faculty of Science, Cairo University, Noura Abul-Hasan, Faculty of Medicine, Kasr Al Ainy, Youmna Gharieb, Khaled Mohei, Mustafa El-Tably, Mohamed Moussa, Mohamed Fathy and Youssef El-Shafei, Faculty of Medicine, Ain Shams University. As well as Mohamed Moataz, Mohamed Anwar and Yara Essam from Faculty of Engineering, Ain Shams University, and Rana Saad, Faculty of Computers and Information, Ain Shams University. Whereas the team who travelled to Boston to represent Egypt in the competition are Aya Mahmoud, Faculty of Science, Cairo University, Noura Abul-Hasan, Faculty of Medicine, Cairo University, and Mohamed Moataz, Faculty of Engineering, Ain Shams University.
