Cairo University continues its global progress and ranks 260th globally in the Leiden Ranking 2024

CU advances by 34.3% and leads all African universities

CU comes out ahead of many European and American universities, such as Freie Universität Berlin, the University of Geneva, Maastricht University, and the University of Barcelona.

CU is ranked first in Africa out of 43 African universities

Dr. Mohamed Othman Elkhosht, President of Cairo University, announced a new achievement for CU by topping the Egyptian and African universities in the Leiden Ranking for the year 2024 (CWTS Leiden Ranking), the prestigious international classification of universities that relies on transparent, measurable and analytical standards. The Leiden Ranking is based on the data available through the Clarivate index and the Web of Science index.

The Leiden classification announced that Cairo University now ranks 260th globally, ahead of more than 30,000 universities from all over the world, placing it among the top 1% of prestigious universities globally.

According to the Leiden Ranking, CU ranked first in Egypt out of 15 Egyptian universities. It also ranked first in Africa out of 43 African universities, and came out ahead of many European and American universities, such as Freie Universität Berlin, the University of Geneva, Maastricht University, and the University of Barcelona.

The CU President explained that Cairo University ranked 396th in 2017, while its ranking rose to 279 in 2023, and reached 260th place in 2024, reflecting an advance of 34.3% compared to its position in 2017, and an advance of 6.8% compared to last year.

According to Dr. Elkhosht, CU’s achievement in advancing through various classifications is the result of hard work on a strategic executive plan, stressing that this achievement is the culmination of continuous efforts to develop the university’s scientific research system and enhance the quality of research and international publication. CU has witnessed great progress in the global rankings over the past years, a result of commitment to all fields of science and international scientific publication in prestigious, globally indexed scientific journals, which has strengthened CU’s position as a leading university in the field of education and scientific research at the local, regional and global levels.

It is worth noting that the Leiden Classification evaluates the research performance of universities around the world using many sets of bibliometric indicators, which are reliable practical standards for collecting data, and this ensures confidence in the results published from the classifier. The Leiden classification does not require universities to provide any information, but rather draws its data from the global influence of each university and its scientific research published in international journals with an impact factor in terms of value, reliability, familiarity and citation, especially the data available to the classifier through the Clarivate – Web of Science global indicator.
