Under the presidency of Professor Dr. Hussam Kamel, Cairo University has awarded Her Excellency, Mrs. Suzanne Mubarak, President Mubarak wife, an honorary doctorate in Sociology. The decision was based on her great and continuous contributions in the field of policies and programs for societal development over the past three decades. The Department of Sociology stated that several facts and considerations lie behind its decision, some of which were scientific, namely, that Mrs. Suzanne has obtained a Master s degree in Sociology from the American University in 1982, and that she has contributed in institutionalizing public and voluntary social work at the national, regional and international levels, especially in the realms of empowering women, family stability, safeguarding the rights of the child and spreading and corroborating the values and culture of peace.
The Department mentioned among its reasons for the award the initiative that was launched by Mrs. Suzanne Mubarak 20 years ago for the enhancement of the cultural life in Egypt through her great national project “Reading for all”, a project that brought in striking consequences in the business of publishing, using different versions of books in various fields of knowledge and science‏.
The Department of Sociology at the Faculty of Arts also paid tribute to the role played by Mrs. Suzanne Mubarak in building and supporting child Cancer Hospital and her belief in her enlightening role, namely, in the revival of the library of Alexandria and the great care that was given to its great activities and events. This is in addition to the development that happened to our children through her adoption and implementation of the project of ‘the construction of 100 school, establishing Suzan Mubaraks movement for women for the purpose of peace, and adopting the protection of youth from the dangers of technology and the internet. In addition to the international appreciation and honor that Mrs. Suzan Mubarak has received, many international universities have awarded her the honorary doctorate, and the UNESCO has awarded her one of the highest prizes which is Ibn Sinais prize. Moreover, several international universities and centers have invited her to give speeches about Egypts leading experiences in the field of social development.
Furthermore, Mrs. Suzan Mubarak made unique contributions to serve Cairo University, one of which, for instance, is her noble initiative to start constructing the new building for the National Cancer Institution which belongs to Cairo University by establishing a special organization which becomes in charge of accomplishing this grand mission. In addition, she had a leading role in supporting the new central library for Cairo University starting from the basic stone which Her Excellency has laid down to the inauguration of the library.
Not only does Mrs. Suzan Mubarak present an ideal model but also she is the conscious researcher incarnate, who is concerned about the predicaments of her country and her world, depending in each of her initiatives on the basics, facts, and theories of sociology. All this makes her worthy of the honorary doctorate degree awarded to her by Cairo University, one of the most ancient universities, that has always awarded this degree to international persons who made an immense impact on the life of their nations and on the world.
