Prof. Dr.\ Khaled El-Adly, Giza Governor, and Prof. Dr.\ Gaber Nassar Inaugurates A Promotional Convoy of Illiteracy Eradication Activity

Cairo University has hosted a promotional convoy of illiteracy eradication activity in participation of university students for five days from April 26 to April 30, 2015. The opening session has started at 12 p.m., Sunday, April 26, 2015, at Conference Center, Cairo University.


The convoy organization comes in the context of launching national project, entitled “Giza without Illiteracy”, at remote centers and villages of Giza. The opening has been attended by Dr.\ Khaled Zakariah El-Adly, Giza Governor, Prof. Dr.\ Gaber Nassar, President of Cairo University, Prof. Dr.\ Gamal Abdul-Nasser, Vice President of Cairo University for Community Service and Environment Development Affairs, Prof. Dr.\ Ezz-ul-Din Abu-Steit, Vice President of Cairo University for Education and Students Affairs, Dr.\ Manal Awad, Deputy Governor of Giza, Major General Eng.\ Mohamed Afify, Chairman of The Executive Board of Illiteracy Eradication and Adult Learning, Dr.\ Gasser Awad, Giza Governor Adviser for Illiteracy Eradication, as well as elite of university professors and students.


Dr.\ Khaled Zakariah El-Adly, Giza Governor, has illustrated that the target that Giza Governorate seeks is terminating illiteracy completely among Giza citizens. He mentioned that illiteracy eradication rate all over the state is annually estimated with 750, 000 citizens. This number is not enough, and there is continuous effort exerted for reaching the highest rates through the best methods.


He added that societal participation is the best method for achieving this, and that the governorate seeks cooperation with university, and this will never be achieved except through participation of citizens and national associations. He confirmed that university should provide a group of youth for performing illiteracy eradication of the governorate, pointing out that solidarity is the best method for reaching the goal. He concluded his speech with thanking the aware university students without whom existence, culture, country and community service Egypt can never progress.


Prof. Dr.\ Gaber Nassar, President of Cairo University, has said in his speech that university is the home of all Egyptians, besides, it enjoys its existence in the heart of Giza Governorate, He illustrated that illiteracy rate is large in the Egyptian Society, therefore, it needs to be solved through societal participation and solidarity. He confirmed that university will provide all its material and human potentials for the sake of solving this critical problem. He pointed out that university has human power that enables it to contribute to solving the problem and terminating it. The responsibility of each individual towards this issue should be specified as well as the mechanisms with which we should work. He added that training courses will be made on how to eradicate illiteracy of citizens. In this respect, the procedures to be taken will be announced before the end-of-year vacation.


Prof. Dr.\ Ezz-ul-Din Abu-Steit, Vice President of University for education and Students Affairs, has illustrated in his opening speech that illiteracy, with its negative effects, is regarded one of the most important problems that face society. There is no doubt that illiteracy rates are from the most prominent obstacles that face the Egyptian Society. Therefore, the best means of solving and terminating this problem is effective societal collaboration between Giza Governorate and Cairo University. University students take the sense of their national duty towards this phenomenon and their participation in terminating it.


Prof. Dr.\ Gamal Abdul-Nasser, Vice President of University for Community Service and Environment Development Affairs, has confirmed that illiteracy eradication issue is one of the most important tasks and interests of Community Service and Environment Development Sector. He illustrated that there is an administration for illiteracy eradication, however, collaborative work and integration are still the best solution for terminating this problem.  


He pointed out that statistics report that Giza Governorate is one of the most Egyptian Governorates that suffer from illiteracy, and that illiteracy eradication of many categories of society should be made through the help and efforts of university sons, including students, professors and employees.
