Cairo University Participates in the Sixteen-Day Global Campaign on Combating Gender-Based Violence

Cairo University participates in the sixteen-day campaign on violence against women which starts on November 25, 2015, and ends on December 10, 2015. It is a global campaign in which the civil community, universities and organizations, which are concerned with combating violence against women, participate under the auspices of the United Nations.

The Anti-Harassment and Combating Violence Against Women Unit – Cairo University organizes the campaign activities in 16 days, under the auspices of Prof. Dr. Gaber Nassar, Cairo University President. The focus is going to be on education (a secure university for all), awareness, educating by a series of activities in 16 days.

According to Prof. Dr. Maha al-Said, the Chair of the Executive Committee of The Anti-Harassment and Combating Violence Against Women Unit – Cairo University, the unit selected a mission that targets the university youth by spreading knowledge among them on gender-based violence. Knowledge intends enhancing preventing and protecting women from violence and raising the awareness that the university is secure for all through the participation of students, staff members and employees in the activities of that campaign.

The sixteen-day activities in the framework of the global campaign for combating gender-based violence include several activities most prominent of which are the inauguration which is going to be at 11 a.m., Wednesday, November 25, 2015. The inauguration include launching a march with flags inside the university in the presence of the university president, Prof. Dr. Gaber Nassar, the university vice presidents, deans, staff members, students and members of The Anti-Harassment Committee – Cairo University. Students from different places inside the university are joining the march, wearing sweat-shirts printed with the logo of the unit and the United Nations. After that, the opening ceremony is starting, and launching the activities is being announced at auditorium 78 at Faculty of Arts, Cairo University. The opening ceremony is starting with a speech by Cairo University president, announcing the start of the sixteen-day activities. Prof. Dr. Maha al-Said, Head of The Anti-Harassment and Combating Violence Against Women Unit, Cairo University, is delivering a speech of orientation of the sixteen-day campaign and the activities that the university is participating in the campaign with.

The following days comprise seminars at the faculties, documentary films and awareness seminars at the faculties inside the university campus and outside it, as well as competitions, exhibitions of photos and paintings at the faculties yards, and workshops for training students on the tasks of awareness caravans. Besides, a search day is being organized in collaboration with National Center for Social and Criminological Research and Center for Social Research at Faculty of Arts on November 30. On December 2, an activity is going to be held in cooperation with Solidarity for Equality Movement launched by the United Nations for woman.

The concluding ceremony on December 10 is witnessing a number of public figures and representatives of Civil Community and United Nations.
