For the first time in the history of Egyptian universities, the English (QS) classification of majors for the year 2024 announced the introduction of 6 majors into the top 100 universities in the world, including one major among the top 50 universities, in a new achievement for Cairo University in international rankings. CU has made a significant leap forward in the humanities and social sciences majors.

Dr. Mohamed Othman Elkhosht, President of Cairo University, said that the university has kept up its great success in international rankings. CU ranked 38th worldwide in the field of library and information management, while in the field of veterinary science, it came in 51-70th place. Globally, in the Pharmacy & Pharmacology specialization, Cairo University ranked 64th globally; in Dentistry it ranked 51-100 globally, and in Development Studies as well as Petroleum Engineering, it ranked 51-100 globally.

Dr. Elkhosht explained that the English classification (QS) of international universities placed Cairo University as the only university in Egypt to advance from previous years in all five main sectors of the classification – CU having come out on top in all five sectors – and among the best 300 international universities offering majors out of a total of 30,000 universities.

Dr. Elkhosht pointed out the significant progress in the rankings of the main scientific sectors in universities, as well as the Arts and Humanities sector. For the first time, CU ranked 251st  globally and first in Egypt, followed by the American University in Cairo at 333rd, with a difference of 82 places, and the Engineering and Technology sector 149th globally and first in Egypt, followed by 5 Egyptian universities, while the life sciences and medicine sector ranked 192nd globally and first in Egypt, followed by 3 Egyptian universities. The natural sciences sector ranked 275th globally and first in Egypt, followed by 3 Egyptian universities; the social and administrative sciences sector ranked 227th globally and first in Egypt, followed by the American University in 331st place with a difference of 104 places, then Ain Shams at 501-550, a difference of 274 places.

Dr. Elkhosht confirmed that the Cairo University Center has witnessed a significant advancement in 4 years amounting to 50%, having increased its 21 majors in 2021 to 31 majors in 2024, including 6 that rank among the top 100 international universities, 16 ranking among the top 200 globally, 28 among the top 300 globally, and 31 among the top 400 globally. CU also jumped 184 places in overall development in a single year, a 33% improvement over the previous year – it ranked in 371st place globally, a marked improvement from its previous ranking of 551-560.

The President of Cairo University emphasized that there are many international classifications for universities. Some of these focus on the quality of education on offer, some focus on comprehensive outcomes, and some focus on the outcomes of scientific research and employment of graduates. Whatever the type of classification and criteria used, the outcome is the overall general assessment of the university’s role in creating a type of change that leads to advancement and societal progress, as well as how far these universities influence a number of developmental, environmental, economic, social, educational and health aspects at the national, regional and global levels. This is what distinguishes Cairo University and its goals, being a university that advances and promotes academic endeavor. CU has broken into the 50 top universities in the field of petroleum engineering, and in the humanities, specifically information and library management, it broke into the top 100 universities in 6 specializations. CU is now one of the top 300 universities in the world in a number of rankings, the top 400 universities worldwide in others, and #1 in Egypt overall.

This classification, issued by the British QS Foundation, analyzes the reality of higher education based on academic reputation, a university’s reptuation with employers, research citations, and human resources (ratio of faculty members to students; numbers for international students and faculty members from abroad).
