Cairo University maintains its leadership in international rankings and its position among the top 400 international universities in the Shanghai Ranking for 2024



CU has renewed its regional and global leadership in the major international rankings. While other Egyptian universities also topped the Shanghai rankings (ARWU) for the year 2024, and maintained their presence in the category between 301-400 for international universities, CU continued to rank among the top 1% of global universities and #1 in Egypt for the year 2024, adding to its achievements in recent years and firmly situating it among the most prestigious universities worldwide.

The Shanghai classification, which is considered the most important classification in the world, showed that CU is the only university in Egypt to rank among the top 400 international universities. Seven Egyptian universities come later in the results. The Egyptian university closest to CU follows it by 300 places: there are 3 Egyptian universities in the category of 601 to 700, two universities in the 701-800 category, and two universities in the 901-1000 category.

Dr. Mohamed Sami Abdelsadek, President of Cairo University, confirmed that this new achievement is a testament to the efforts made by faculty members and researchers and their unparalleled teamwork, as well as the technical and research support generously and willingly provided by the university administration, as well as CU’s highly motivated researchers in all specializations to publish in prestigious international journals. And establishing various partnerships with leading international universities, and all of these complementary efforts have achieved leadership and distinction for Cairo University at the local and international levels.

According to Dr. Mahmoud Alsaid, Vice President of the University for Graduate Studies and Research, the Shanghai classification (ARWU) is one of the most important and best-known international classifications, based on 6 specific and measurable criteria for classifying the world’s universities: the number of university graduates who have won Nobel Prizes in their field (10%), the number of faculty members who have won both the Nobel Prize and other awards in their field (20%), the number of frequently cited scientists listed in the Clarivate database (20%), the number of research papers published on behalf of the university in Nature and Science journals (20%), and the number of papers indexed in global databases (Web of Science Papers) (20%), as well as the relative weight of the five indicators above divided by the number of faculty members at the university (10%).
