Science Heritage Center – Cairo University organizes the International Year of Light ceremony in cooperation with Inventions 1001 Foundation on Tuesday, November 17, 2015, at 11 a.m., at El-Tanwir Hall, the third floor, New Central Library.
The activities of the ceremony is sponsored by Dr. Helmy Namnam, Minister of Culture, Dr. Gaber Nassar, Cairo University President, and supervised by Dr. Said El-Daw, The University Vice President for Community Service and Environment Development Affairs. The activities start with organizing a major seminar, entitled (The Physicist Alhazen and his Journey from Darkness to Light). The seminar is managed by Dr. Hamed Eid, The Director of Science Heritage Center, and elite of professors specialized in science, arts and archaeology, foremost among whom are Dr. Hussein Nassar, Professor of Faculty of Arts – Cairo University, Dr. Ahmed Fouad Pasha, Professor of Faculty of Science – Cairo University, Dr. Mohamed Hamza El-Haddad, Professor of Islamic Civilization and Dean of Faculty of Archaeology – Cairo University, Dr. Abdul-Sattar El-Halougy, Professor of Arts – Cairo University, and Dr. Maha Mazloum, Heritage Verification Center – Dar El Kotob
Hamed Eid illustrated that, in the fringe of the ceremony, an exhibition is being held, encompassing photos and photocopies of Islamic civilization achievements in the science field, as well as holding an exhibition for book heritage in participation with The Egyptian National Library and Archives (Dar El Kotob), besides, a bibliographic list on the works of Hasan Ibn al-Haytham (Alhazen).
Eid added that Hasan Ibn al-Haytham (Alhazen) movie is being displayed for the first time on December 21, 2015, as the second part of the International Year of Light celebration. It is produced by Inventions 1001 Foundation, starring the late artist Omar Sharif. Eid confirmed that International Year of Light and Light-Based Technologies are the joint initiative of a group of scientific authorities that work in partnership with International Basic Sciences Programme – UNESCO. This group includes a number of representatives of the scientific circles, civil community and academic community 2015. It is worth noting that international year of light coincidences the celebration of the passage of thousand years since publishing Book of Optics, by Alhazen.
