Cairo University Center for Foreign Languages and Professional Translation has organized a workshop, entitled "Modern Trends in Cooperative Learning". This is one of the activities conducted by the center in the training field and recognizing modern trends in education.
Dr.\ Amany Badawy, director of the center, and Dr.\ Sayed Saad, the academic coordinator of the center, have witnessed the workshop throughout the day. Dr.\ David Hansen, the American educational expert, gave a lecture in the workshop with the participation of a number of those who are interested in methods of cooperative learning. The workshop revolved around the idea of cooperative learning and its role in developing the educational process. Cooperative learning is based on dividing students into small or large groups to achieve interaction between them. The workshop stressed the importance of this type of learning in creating direct interaction between students and achieving individual and collective responsibility of each student to be responsible for his/her own learning as well as the learning of others, regarding him/her as a partner in the educational process.
The workshop has tackled the role of cooperative learning in enhancing several social skills related to effective communication including leadership, decision making and establishing confidence and communication. It has also stressed the fact that cooperative learning helps in managing large classes. Cooperative learning also has psychological dimension, namely; educating students to work in groups in order to break the barrier of shyness and fear.
