• Cairo University’s logo depicts Thoth, one of the earlier
Egyptian gods, while holding a pen and writing. The logo is
a reflection of CU’s efforts to enlighten and inspire.
• In ancient Egypt, Thoth was the god of wisdom and writing.
In most carvings, he is usually depicted with an ibis head
and a human body. To ancient Egyptians, the ibis was a
sacred bird that is associated with wisdom. Thoth is usually
seen as carrying the ankh (which represents life) and a
scepter (a symbol of power). As a powerful god, Thoth
taught man writing, medicine, music, and magic. He became
a symbol of learning and knowledge. His temple was in
Hermopolis Magna (currently known as El-Ashmunein).
• Cairo University took part in significant
archaeological excavations and
discoveries of Thoth in the areas of El-
Ashmunein and Tuna El Gebal.
